SpaceX Stock Faces New AI Reality Check as Data Center Buildout Hits Reliability Problems

SpaceX IPO Shatters Records as $1.8 Trillion Valuation Tests Wall Street’s Appetite

SpaceX’s aggressive push into artificial-intelligence infrastructure is entering a more cautious phase just weeks after investors celebrated explosive AI revenue growth. The company has reshuffled leadership inside the team responsible for building its data centers, bringing in executives from SpaceX’s rocket and Starlink operations after reliability and civil-engineering concerns emerged at facilities in Tennessee and Mississippi, according to The Information. The report suggests that SpaceX may slow parts of its breakneck expansion while it improves cooling, backup power and operating reliability—an important shift for a company that has made construction speed one of the central selling points of its AI strategy.

For SpaceX stock, the development cuts directly into one of the company’s newest and fastest-growing businesses. SpaceX reported $2.56 billion of AI-segment revenue in the second quarter, up 247.5% year over year, while AI Solutions & Infrastructure revenue alone reached $2.19 billion. But producing that growth required a staggering $15.8 billion of AI capital expenditure in a single quarter, helping push total company capex to $18.4 billion. SpaceX remains free-cash-flow negative, leaving investors to decide whether the enormous spending is creating a high-return infrastructure franchise or simply pushing financial risk further into the future.

That makes the latest report more than an operational footnote. SpaceX has spent much of the year persuading investors that it can build AI compute faster than traditional hyperscalers, monetize excess capacity and eventually combine terrestrial data centers with orbital computing infrastructure. If management now needs to prioritize reliability over raw construction speed, the economics of that thesis could change. The question is not whether demand exists. The company already has customers willing to pay billions. The harder question is how quickly SpaceX can add reliable capacity without allowing the infrastructure boom to overwhelm its balance sheet.

The Data Centers Were Built Fast — Perhaps Too Fast

SpaceX’s AI infrastructure arm inherited the famously aggressive development culture of Elon Musk’s companies. Colossus and Colossus II were brought online at extraordinary speed, with SpaceX disclosures saying the two facilities reached operation in approximately 122 days and 91 days respectively. Together, the company reported 1.4 gigawatts of nameplate AI compute capacity as of June 30, up from 1 gigawatt three months earlier and only 0.4 gigawatts a year ago.

But fast construction creates trade-offs. According to The Information, some existing facilities operated for periods without fully developed backup cooling and backup power systems, increasing the risk that equipment failures or utility problems could trigger outages. SpaceX has now replaced several data-center leaders with managers from its more mature rocket and satellite businesses as it attempts to improve reliability.

That matters enormously when the customers renting the infrastructure are major AI companies running mission-critical workloads. A data center packed with hundreds of thousands of expensive Nvidia GPUs can generate enormous revenue when it is available, but downtime can quickly damage customer trust and reduce utilization. AI infrastructure customers increasingly care about the same things conventional cloud customers have demanded for years: redundancy, service guarantees, cooling resilience, network stability and predictable power.

SpaceX has proved that it can build quickly. The next stage is proving that its data centers can operate with hyperscale reliability.

Anthropic Shows Why SpaceX Cannot Afford Major Outages

The financial stakes are already enormous. In May, SpaceX signed cloud-services agreements with Anthropic covering access to compute capacity across Colossus and Colossus II. According to SpaceX’s IPO disclosures, the arrangements provide Anthropic with access to approximately 325,000 Nvidia GPUs, supported by hyperscale CPUs, exabyte-scale storage and high-speed networking. Anthropic agreed to pay $1.25 billion per month through May 2029, following reduced fees during the initial capacity ramp.

There is an important caveat: after the initial three-month period, either party can terminate the agreements with 90 days’ notice. That clause makes reliability even more consequential than the headline contract value might suggest. SpaceX cannot simply point to the theoretical value of a multi-year agreement if customers have contractual flexibility to leave when service quality deteriorates or alternatives become more attractive.

SpaceX itself acknowledges the concentration risk in its regulatory filings. The company says a significant portion of its AI infrastructure revenue comes from a small number of customers and warns that reduced spending, contract termination, migration to competing providers or customers developing their own infrastructure could materially hurt revenue and cash flow.

That transforms the reported reliability issues into a financial concern. When one large customer can represent more than $1 billion of monthly revenue, uptime is not simply an engineering metric. It is a revenue-protection mechanism.

The Irony Is That AI Infrastructure Has Already Started Making Real Money

The latest concerns arrive just as SpaceX has begun showing that its AI infrastructure investments can produce substantial commercial returns. Second-quarter AI revenue rose to $2.56 billion from $737 million a year earlier, while AI Solutions & Infrastructure revenue jumped to $2.19 billion from only $311 million. SpaceX attributed roughly $1.6 billion of the increase directly to new AI infrastructure revenue generated as the company started offering cloud services to outside customers.

The segment also reached $1.15 billion of adjusted EBITDA in Q2, swinging from a $276 million adjusted EBITDA loss one year earlier. That operating leverage gives bulls a strong argument: once the expensive infrastructure is installed and rented out, each additional dollar of utilization can generate significant earnings.

Management has gone even further, arguing that its AI infrastructure investments can achieve payback periods of less than a year under current pricing and utilization. That claim helped investors understand why SpaceX is willing to spend so aggressively even while consolidated free cash flow remains negative.

But those payback assumptions depend on equipment being online, customers remaining under contract and construction proceeding roughly on schedule. A slower expansion program would not necessarily destroy the economics. It could actually improve long-term returns if the alternative is unreliable facilities that experience costly outages. What it would do is push some revenue further into the future.

For a stock valued on extraordinary growth, timing matters.

SpaceX Is Spending at a Scale That Leaves Very Little Room for Mistakes

The bigger concern is how much capital SpaceX is committing. AI capex reached $23.55 billion during the first half of 2026 alone, compared with just $3.32 billion during the same period a year earlier. Q2 accounted for $15.83 billion of that spending.

Outside estimates suggest the number could become dramatically larger. S&P Global has projected SpaceX capital expenditure approaching $70 billion in 2026 and nearly $200 billion in 2027, potentially climbing toward $230 billion annually later in the decade as the company simultaneously funds AI compute, Starlink expansion, Starship, semiconductor manufacturing and new launch infrastructure.

The broader AI industry is already discovering how difficult that infrastructure race can become. AI-related debt issuance reached nearly $500 billion through early August, according to Goldman Sachs estimates cited by Reuters Breakingviews, while lenders are demanding stronger protections as construction delays, electricity constraints and permitting problems become more common.

Those pressures are relevant to SpaceX even with the enormous capital raised through its public offering and debt issuance. The company is attempting to build multiple capital-intensive businesses at once. Every billion spent repairing, redesigning or slowing a data-center deployment is capital that cannot be deployed somewhere else.

That does not mean a slowdown is bearish by definition. It means execution discipline becomes increasingly valuable.

Electricity Is Becoming as Important as Nvidia GPUs

The reliability issue also illustrates a broader constraint facing every AI infrastructure company: obtaining GPUs is no longer enough. Data centers need enormous quantities of dependable electricity, cooling systems, transmission infrastructure and local approvals.

SpaceX is developing a permanent 1.2-gigawatt natural-gas power facility to support its Memphis-area operations while phasing out temporary gas turbines. The company has said it plans to purchase roughly $2.8 billion of turbines for data-center power over several years.

Across the United States, the power bottleneck is becoming increasingly severe. Proposed data-center connection requests have exceeded 700 gigawatts, more than ten times estimated current U.S. data-center electricity demand, prompting regulators in Texas and other states to scrutinize whether all proposed projects are financially viable.

That makes SpaceX’s integrated approach potentially valuable. The company is not simply purchasing GPUs; it is developing power infrastructure, networking, storage, chips and potentially orbital computing. But integration creates complexity. A problem with any one layer—electricity, cooling, construction or networking—can prevent billions of dollars of processors from generating revenue.

The reported leadership changes suggest SpaceX is now treating those operational details with greater urgency.

Starlink Gives SpaceX Something Most AI Infrastructure Rivals Don’t Have

SpaceX does have one major financial advantage over many AI infrastructure startups: Starlink.

Connectivity revenue rose 65.8% year over year to approximately $4.3 billion in Q2, making it SpaceX’s largest revenue segment. Starlink continues adding consumer, enterprise and government customers, and the United Kingdom disclosed this week that it has spent nearly $40 million on Starlink and the military-focused Starshield network. SpaceX has also secured more than $6 billion of U.S. government Starshield contracts.

Those businesses give SpaceX recurring cash generation and a diversified revenue base that pure-play AI infrastructure providers do not possess. If data-center deployments take longer, SpaceX still owns one of the world’s dominant satellite broadband networks and a launch business with enormous strategic value.

This diversification cuts both ways, however. Starlink’s success can fund AI expansion, but excessive AI spending could also consume cash that might otherwise support satellite deployment, Starship development or shareholder returns.

That is why investors should watch whether management begins reallocating capital rather than simply whether one data center opens a few months later.

SpaceX Stock: Slowing Down Might Actually Be the Smarter Move

The easiest interpretation of the latest report is that SpaceX’s AI growth engine has hit trouble. Leadership changes, reliability concerns and a potentially slower buildout do not sound bullish for a company selling investors on unprecedented infrastructure expansion.

But there is another interpretation. SpaceX may simply be moving from proof of speed to proof of reliability.

Colossus demonstrated that Musk’s teams could build enormous AI clusters faster than conventional operators. The Anthropic agreement demonstrated that those clusters could generate billions of dollars of commercial revenue. The next requirement is showing that the infrastructure can deliver enterprise-grade uptime while SpaceX scales from roughly 1.4 gigawatts toward a dramatically larger footprint.

A controlled slowdown that reduces outages and protects major customer contracts could ultimately strengthen the business. A slowdown caused by persistent engineering problems, spiraling costs or difficulty supplying power would be a much more serious warning.

That distinction is what investors need to watch next.

SpaceX has already shown that demand exists. Anthropic alone is paying enormous sums for compute, AI revenue is growing by triple digits, and the wider industry remains desperate for infrastructure. The challenge has shifted from finding customers to building enough dependable capacity to serve them without destroying returns on capital.

For SpaceX stock, that may become one of the most important tests of the next year.

Moving fast created the AI opportunity.

Knowing when to slow down may determine whether SpaceX can actually keep it.
