CoreWeave Stock Is Heavily Shorted – But Its $104 Billion AI Backlog Keeps Growing

CoreWeave (CRWV) Earnings Preview: What Wall Street Expects From Tomorrow’s Q4 and FY2025 Results

CoreWeave stock remains one of Wall Street’s most heavily shorted large AI-infrastructure names, with roughly 58.9 million CRWV shares sold short as of August 14, equal to about 16.9% of the public float. Yet the bearish positioning is colliding with extraordinary operating momentum: CoreWeave reported $2.58 billion in second-quarter revenue, a record $104.2 billion revenue backlog and more than $25 billion of additional customer commitments signed early in the third quarter, while management simultaneously raised its 2026 capital-spending plan to as much as $39 billion. That combination has turned CRWV into one of the clearest battleground stocks in the AI infrastructure boom, with bulls betting that unprecedented demand for Nvidia-powered compute will justify the company’s enormous expansion and bears warning that debt, capital intensity and future competition could eventually overwhelm the growth story.

The debate around CoreWeave is more complex than a typical short-squeeze setup because both sides can point to compelling evidence. Bulls see a purpose-built AI cloud provider benefiting from one of the strongest infrastructure spending cycles in modern technology, while bears see a business that must continually spend billions of dollars on GPUs, power, data centers and networking before much of its contracted revenue is realized. The size of the short position therefore matters, but it is not the entire story. The real question is whether CoreWeave can convert more than $100 billion of contracted demand into sustainable earnings and free cash flow before financing costs rise, GPU economics normalize or competing capacity catches up.

CoreWeave Has Nearly 59 Million Shares Sold Short

The latest short-interest data show how aggressively some investors remain positioned against CoreWeave. As of August 14, approximately 58.86 million shares were sold short, representing 16.92% of the company’s public float. Based on the stock price at the reporting date, that bearish position was worth roughly $6.2 billion, making CRWV one of the largest individual short positions among publicly traded AI infrastructure companies. The percentage is especially notable because CoreWeave is no longer a tiny speculative technology stock; it has grown into a large-cap AI infrastructure company with substantial institutional ownership and enormous customer contracts.

There is, however, an important qualification. CoreWeave trades heavily, and its short-interest ratio was only about 1.6 days, meaning short sellers could theoretically close their positions relatively quickly under normal trading volumes. Short interest has also declined from more than 80 million shares at the end of June, suggesting that some bearish investors have already reduced exposure. That makes CRWV less likely to experience a purely mechanical meme-style squeeze driven by a shortage of available shares, but it does not remove the possibility that strong fundamentals could force additional covering and amplify future rallies.

The more interesting squeeze risk comes from earnings and contract execution rather than market mechanics alone. If CoreWeave keeps beating revenue expectations, adds more hyperscaler contracts or proves that margins and free cash flow are improving faster than Wall Street expects, bearish investors could be forced to reconsider the underlying thesis. In that scenario, covering pressure could add fuel to a fundamentally driven move rather than create a short-lived speculative spike.

CoreWeave Revenue More Than Doubled in Q2

CoreWeave’s second-quarter results gave bulls a strong argument that demand is not merely theoretical. The company reported revenue of approximately $2.58 billion, representing year-over-year growth of roughly 113%, and also posted a narrower-than-expected adjusted loss per share. Those numbers alone would have been impressive, but the company’s backlog was arguably even more important because it provides visibility into future demand at a time when investors are questioning whether the AI infrastructure cycle can remain this strong.

CoreWeave ended June with approximately $104.2 billion of revenue backlog, up from $99.4 billion in the previous quarter. The company then said that figure did not include more than $25 billion of net new customer commitments signed early in the third quarter, implying that contracted demand continued accelerating even after the quarter closed. More than half of the backlog has already entered customer delivery, which is a crucial distinction because one of the biggest criticisms of AI infrastructure companies is that enormous contract announcements can take years to convert into reported revenue.

The company also highlighted a growing list of customers across AI labs, hyperscalers and traditional enterprises, including Bentley Systems, Caterpillar, Grammarly, Isomorphic Labs and Sunday Robotics, while expanding relationships with companies such as Databricks, Runway and Cognition. That diversification is increasingly important because CoreWeave has historically faced criticism over customer concentration. A broader customer base would reduce dependence on a handful of giant AI buyers and make the revenue stream more resilient if one major customer slows spending or shifts workloads elsewhere.

AI Demand Is Still Growing Faster Than CoreWeave Can Build

Perhaps the strongest bullish argument for CoreWeave is that demand still appears to be running ahead of the company’s ability to install capacity. Management raised its 2026 capital expenditure forecast to between $35 billion and $39 billion, up from a previous range of $31 billion to $35 billion, while second-quarter capex alone reached roughly $9.4 billion. In most industries, such an aggressive spending increase would immediately worry investors, but CoreWeave argues that this expansion is being driven by signed customer commitments rather than speculative construction.

That distinction is central to the entire CRWV investment thesis. A company that spends $39 billion on data centers without contracted customers would be taking enormous risk because it could end up owning underutilized assets that rapidly depreciate. CoreWeave’s case is different because management says much of the capacity is being built against long-term agreements with customers that already need the compute. If those contracts hold and the infrastructure comes online on schedule, the spending could create a powerful stream of future revenue.

The challenge is execution. Data-center projects require enormous amounts of electricity, advanced GPUs, networking equipment, cooling, financing, permits and construction capacity, and problems in any one area can delay the entire project. If a facility opens six months later than expected, revenue may be pushed out even while interest expense and construction costs continue accumulating. That means CoreWeave must execute with exceptional discipline because the scale of its expansion leaves little room for prolonged delays.

Nvidia Remains CoreWeave’s Biggest Strategic Advantage

CoreWeave’s close relationship with Nvidia remains one of the strongest pillars of the bull case. Unlike general-purpose cloud providers that have adapted existing platforms for AI workloads, CoreWeave built its infrastructure around accelerated computing from the beginning and has become one of the largest operators of Nvidia GPUs outside the major hyperscalers. That specialization has allowed the company to attract customers that need massive amounts of high-performance compute quickly and may not want to build or manage their own facilities.

Nvidia’s latest outlook is therefore highly relevant for CoreWeave investors. The chipmaker recently projected roughly 70% revenue growth for its next fiscal year and indicated that demand for AI infrastructure remains exceptionally strong, while next-generation Vera Rubin systems are expected to drive another major deployment cycle. CoreWeave is positioned to monetize that growth by renting Nvidia-powered compute to AI developers, enterprises and research organizations that either cannot secure enough GPUs directly or prefer flexible cloud access.

There is also a broader structural trend developing around AI compute itself. As the market matures, GPU capacity is beginning to behave more like a standardized financial and infrastructure asset, with greater attention being paid to rental pricing, utilization and long-term hedging. That evolution could help CoreWeave by making large-scale capacity easier to finance and contract, but it could also expose the company to more transparent pricing competition over time. The same market that validates AI compute as a critical resource could eventually pressure returns if capacity becomes more abundant.

Dell’s Latest Results Strengthen the AI Infrastructure Bull Case

Fresh industry data from Dell provide another reason bulls remain confident that AI infrastructure demand has not peaked. Dell recently raised its annual revenue forecast after reporting record AI-server demand, with AI-optimized server revenue reaching $16.4 billion in its latest quarter and backlog climbing to approximately $95 billion. The company also said it had received more than $130 billion in AI-server orders over the previous year and raised its expected fiscal 2027 AI-server revenue to $74 billion.

Those figures matter for CoreWeave because companies like CRWV are among the major buyers of Nvidia-based server infrastructure. The broader signal is that multiple AI infrastructure vendors are simultaneously building enormous backlogs rather than simply taking business from one another. That suggests the underlying market is still expanding quickly enough to support several large winners.

For CoreWeave, Dell’s results strengthen the argument that raising capex is not necessarily reckless if demand remains this strong. If the AI-server market were beginning to slow materially, hardware vendors would likely see order books weaken before cloud providers noticed the full impact. Instead, current evidence points to continued acceleration, giving CoreWeave more justification for expanding capacity aggressively.

The Bear Case Starts With $35 Billion to $39 Billion of Capex

The strongest argument against CoreWeave is also the most obvious: this growth is extremely expensive. The company expects to spend as much as $39 billion in 2026, a figure that dwarfs its current annual revenue base and requires continued access to large amounts of debt, equity and asset-backed financing. The economics can be attractive if customers continue paying premium prices for AI compute and utilization remains high, but the same leverage can become dangerous if demand slows or rental pricing declines.

AI hardware also depreciates unusually quickly. New GPU generations can deliver substantial gains in performance and energy efficiency, meaning a cluster installed today may still be technically functional several years from now but economically less competitive than newer systems. CoreWeave therefore needs to earn strong returns on its hardware before newer platforms reduce the value of existing assets.

That creates a very different risk profile from a software company. Software businesses can often add incremental customers at very low marginal cost, while CoreWeave’s growth requires continuous spending on physical infrastructure. The company is effectively racing to monetize expensive assets before technology advances make them less valuable, and short sellers are betting that the long-term returns on those assets may eventually fall below what current valuations imply.

Debt and Financing Risk Remain Central to CRWV Stock

CoreWeave has relied heavily on debt and structured financing to build its infrastructure, and that leverage is one reason the stock carries much higher short interest than companies such as Nvidia, Microsoft or Amazon. Debt can magnify shareholder returns when utilization is high and long-term customer contracts remain stable, but it also magnifies risk if projects are delayed, customers renegotiate terms or AI-compute pricing weakens.

Rising Treasury yields make the financing equation even more important. The AI infrastructure boom requires enormous amounts of capital, and higher interest rates increase the cost of building every new data center. Technology companies are increasingly competing for capital across global credit markets to fund AI projects, which could eventually push borrowing costs higher or make lenders more selective.

CoreWeave may continue securing financing because its backlog is unusually large, but investors should closely monitor the terms of each new debt issuance. Interest rates, collateral requirements, maturities and covenant structures can materially change the economics of a data-center project. The company does not just need revenue growth; it needs that growth to generate returns comfortably above its cost of capital.

Customer Concentration Is Improving—but Still Matters

CoreWeave has made progress diversifying its customer base, but concentration remains one of the most important risks. The AI-compute market is still dominated by a relatively small group of companies capable of spending billions of dollars on infrastructure, including Microsoft, Meta, OpenAI, Anthropic and several other large technology and AI developers. If one major customer reduces spending or shifts workloads toward internally owned infrastructure, specialized providers such as CoreWeave could feel the impact quickly.

This is why investors should look beyond the headline backlog number and examine the quality of that backlog. A $104 billion order book spread across dozens of strong counterparties would be significantly more valuable and resilient than the same amount concentrated among only a few customers. Greater diversification could also reduce customer bargaining power and make CoreWeave less vulnerable to aggressive pricing negotiations.

The recent expansion into traditional enterprise customers is therefore encouraging. If companies outside the largest AI labs increasingly use CoreWeave for training and inference workloads, the business could gradually become less dependent on a handful of hyperscale buyers. That would improve the quality of the growth story even if overall revenue expansion eventually slows from current triple-digit levels.

CoreWeave Is Still Losing Money

Another issue separating CoreWeave from mature cloud providers is that the company remains loss-making despite its extraordinary revenue growth. The business must absorb large depreciation charges, financing costs and infrastructure expenses associated with building data centers at unprecedented speed. That means rapid top-line expansion does not automatically translate into strong shareholder returns.

Management argues that operating leverage should improve as recently built capacity becomes fully utilized and begins generating revenue. There is some evidence that this transition is underway, with the latest quarterly loss coming in narrower than analysts expected and management suggesting that greater scale is beginning to improve operating economics.

The key question is whether that improvement can continue while capex remains near $40 billion. Investors should therefore pay close attention to operating margins, adjusted EBITDA, free cash flow and interest expense rather than focusing only on revenue growth. A company can double sales and still destroy shareholder value if the cost of financing and maintaining infrastructure exceeds the economic return those assets generate.

Why Bears Keep Shorting CoreWeave

Short sellers have several legitimate reasons to remain involved despite the company’s explosive growth. CoreWeave’s valuation assumes significant future expansion, while its business model requires continuous capital spending, meaningful leverage and the confidence that customers will continue paying attractive rates for advanced GPU capacity. Competition is also growing from hyperscalers, Nebius, Oracle and other specialized AI infrastructure providers.

There is an even larger question about the AI infrastructure cycle itself. Global data-center investment could reach trillions of dollars by the end of the decade, but the very size of that forecast raises concerns that too much capacity could eventually be built. If supply begins catching up with demand, GPU rental prices could fall and utilization rates could weaken.

That is the core bearish thesis. Short sellers are not necessarily betting that AI demand collapses tomorrow. Many are betting that the economics of providing AI compute become less attractive over time as scarcity fades, competitors expand and customers gain more bargaining power. If that happens before CoreWeave earns back the billions it is investing, returns could disappoint even if revenue remains large.

Why the Shorts Could Still Be Wrong

The bullish response is that demand keeps surprising to the upside faster than capacity can be added. CoreWeave already has more than $104 billion in backlog, another $25 billion in additional customer commitments, rapidly rising revenue and direct exposure to Nvidia’s next-generation computing platforms. Nvidia itself continues signaling powerful AI demand, while Dell’s enormous server backlog provides independent evidence that infrastructure spending remains exceptionally strong.

Those data points make it difficult to argue that the AI infrastructure boom is already ending. The more credible bear case is that returns eventually normalize rather than demand suddenly disappearing. That distinction matters because “eventually” could be several years away, and CoreWeave may have substantial time to scale revenue, improve margins and reduce financial risk before the market becomes more competitive.

If the company can generate enough cash during the current period of scarcity, today’s short sellers could ultimately prove correct about long-term normalization but still be too early in betting against the stock. In high-growth infrastructure markets, timing often matters as much as the final thesis.

Is CoreWeave Stock a Short-Squeeze Candidate?

CoreWeave has enough short interest to amplify bullish moves, but not enough liquidity pressure to create a classic squeeze based on positioning alone. Nearly 17% of public float is short, yet the days-to-cover ratio is only about 1.6, giving bears considerably more room to exit than they would have in a thinly traded small-cap stock.

The more interesting squeeze catalyst would therefore be another fundamental surprise. If CoreWeave raises guidance, announces another major hyperscaler agreement or proves that operating margins are improving faster than expected, bearish investors may decide the risk-reward has changed. Their covering could then intensify a fundamentally driven rally.

That is ultimately a stronger setup for long-term bulls than relying on squeeze mechanics alone. CoreWeave does not need short sellers to make the investment case work. It needs to prove that its backlog, capacity expansion and customer demand can eventually produce durable cash flow.

Outlook: CoreWeave’s $104 Billion Backlog Is the Number That Matters

CoreWeave has become one of the purest public-market bets on the global AI infrastructure boom. The company has more than $104 billion in backlog, another $25 billion of new commitments, rapidly growing revenue and direct exposure to Nvidia’s next-generation computing platforms. Demand across the broader AI-server market remains exceptionally strong, and there is little evidence yet that hyperscalers or AI developers are materially slowing their infrastructure ambitions.

But none of that makes CRWV low risk. Investors should watch backlog conversion, financing costs, capital efficiency, customer concentration and the path toward positive free cash flow because those metrics will determine whether CoreWeave is building a durable AI-cloud franchise or simply financing an extraordinarily expensive race for compute capacity.

The short sellers are betting that the economics will eventually disappoint, while the bulls are betting that AI demand will remain ahead of supply long enough for CoreWeave to scale into the infrastructure it is building.

With almost 59 million CRWV shares already sold short, another major earnings beat could force some bears to reconsider. But the real battle is much bigger than a squeeze: CoreWeave now has to prove that a $104 billion AI backlog can ultimately produce something even more valuable—sustainable cash flow.
