Nebius stock has emerged as one of the largest heavily shorted AI infrastructure names on Wall Street, with about 21.9% of its public float sold short as of August 14 even as revenue, contracted backlog and data-center capacity surge. The bearish positioning puts NBIS in an unusually combustible setup: skeptics are betting that massive capital spending, dilution and an aggressive valuation will eventually catch up with the company, while bulls point to multibillion-dollar contracts with Microsoft and Meta, Nvidia backing and triple-digit AI-cloud growth as evidence that Nebius could still have considerably more room to run.
Nebius is much larger than many of the speculative stocks that typically dominate short-squeeze screens. At around $200 per share on September 2, NBIS carries an equity value of more than $50 billion, putting billions of dollars behind the bearish trade rather than the relatively small positions found in typical meme stocks. That makes the battle around Nebius particularly interesting because it is not simply a squeeze story. Investors are debating whether one of the fastest-growing AI-cloud providers can build enough profitable infrastructure quickly enough to justify an enormous valuation before financing costs and competition begin eating into returns.
Nebius Stock Has More Than 55 Million Shares Sold Short
The latest reported short-interest data show just how aggressively some investors are positioned against Nebius. As of August 14, approximately 55.36 million NBIS shares were sold short, equivalent to roughly 21.88% of public float. At the price on the reporting date, the bearish position represented approximately $15.4 billion in market value, making Nebius one of the largest individual equity short positions in dollar terms in the latest data.
There is an important nuance, however. Short interest actually declined about 8.1% from the previous report, when more than 60 million Nebius shares were short. The days-to-cover ratio was only about two days because NBIS trades heavily, meaning the stock does not currently have the extreme liquidity constraints associated with the most violent historical short squeezes. The setup is therefore less extreme than a company where 40% of float is short and it would take two weeks of normal trading volume for bears to exit.
Still, having more than one-fifth of the public float sold short is unusually high for a company of Nebius’s size. Seeking Alpha’s latest screen identified 44 mid- to mega-cap stocks with short interest above 20%, placing Nebius among a relatively small group of larger companies where bearish positioning remains exceptionally concentrated.
For traders, that concentration creates an obvious catalyst. If Nebius produces another earnings beat, signs another hyperscaler agreement or raises its capacity and revenue outlook, short sellers could become incremental buyers as they close positions. That would not automatically create a GameStop-style squeeze, but it could amplify an already powerful move.
The Fundamental Bull Case Is Much Stronger Than a Typical Short-Squeeze Stock
What separates Nebius from many heavily shorted names is the pace of its actual operating growth.
Nebius reported second-quarter 2026 revenue of approximately $582.3 million, up around 454% from the prior-year period. AI cloud accounted for nearly all of that revenue, and annualized run-rate revenue reached roughly $3 billion. The company has moved from a relatively small AI infrastructure provider into one of the fastest-growing independent cloud-compute platforms in less than two years.
That growth reflects a basic industry problem: demand for advanced AI compute continues to exceed available capacity. Nvidia’s latest results reinforced the point, with the chipmaker forecasting about 70% sales growth next year and signaling that the AI infrastructure buildout remains far from finished. Reuters noted that Nvidia-backed cloud providers including Nebius and CoreWeave benefited from renewed confidence that hyperscaler and AI-lab spending will remain elevated.
Nebius has positioned itself directly in that bottleneck. Rather than competing broadly with Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud across every type of computing workload, it has concentrated heavily on GPU infrastructure and software optimized for AI developers.
That specialization has allowed it to win enormous contracts from companies that already operate their own hyperscale infrastructure.
Meta Could Be Worth Up to $27 Billion to Nebius
The Meta agreement is perhaps the strongest evidence behind the bullish NBIS thesis.
In March, Nebius announced a five-year agreement under which it will provide Meta with $12 billion of dedicated AI-compute capacity across several locations beginning in early 2027. The deployments will use Nvidia’s Vera Rubin platform, putting Nebius among the earliest large-scale cloud operators planning to deploy Nvidia’s next generation of AI hardware.
The contract has an additional component that could make it far larger. Meta committed to purchase other available compute capacity across certain future Nebius clusters if Nebius cannot sell all of that capacity to third-party customers. That commitment could be worth another $15 billion, bringing the potential total agreement value to approximately $27 billion over five years.
The structure is attractive because Nebius retains the ability to sell capacity to other AI customers while using Meta as a backstop for portions of the infrastructure.
For investors, that reduces one of the major risks associated with building expensive data centers: constructing billions of dollars of infrastructure before knowing whether enough customers will show up.
The Meta deal does not eliminate execution risk, because Nebius still needs to secure power, build facilities, acquire GPUs and deliver capacity on schedule. But having a customer of Meta’s scale committed before construction materially changes the economics.
Microsoft Was the Deal That Changed the Nebius Story
Microsoft provided the first major validation.
Nebius announced its initial multiyear AI infrastructure agreement with Microsoft in September 2025, committing dedicated capacity from its New Jersey data center. Management said at the time that the agreement would allow the company to accelerate expansion more aggressively during 2026 and beyond.
Nebius later said it had more than $40 billion of additional contracted revenue from investment-grade customers including Microsoft and Meta. In July 2026, the company disclosed that it had delivered the latest planned capacity tranche to Microsoft and remained on schedule for the remaining deployments.
That is important because one of the primary arguments made by bears is that AI infrastructure contracts can look impressive on paper but remain dependent on costly construction and execution.
Nebius is beginning to demonstrate that the capacity can actually move into service and generate cash flows.
The ability to convert long-term customer commitments into operating infrastructure may ultimately determine whether NBIS deserves its premium valuation.
Nvidia Has Put $2 Billion Behind Nebius
Another major advantage is Nvidia itself.
In March, Nvidia and Nebius announced a strategic partnership under which Nvidia agreed to invest $2 billion in the company. The two businesses said they would collaborate across AI-factory design, infrastructure and software, with the goal of enabling Nebius to deploy more than five gigawatts of Nvidia systems by the end of 2030.
The relationship is strategically valuable beyond the headline investment.
The entire AI-cloud industry is dependent on access to advanced GPUs, and demand for the newest Nvidia hardware routinely exceeds supply. A close relationship with Nvidia may improve Nebius’s ability to plan capacity, optimize systems and bring next-generation platforms into production quickly.
It also creates an important credibility signal.
Nvidia is effectively supporting an emerging cloud provider that could sell vast amounts of its hardware over the coming years. That does not guarantee Nebius will succeed, but it reinforces the idea that NBIS is no longer a niche infrastructure experiment.
The Bear Case Starts With Spending
The skeptics are not shorting Nebius without reason.
Building AI infrastructure is extraordinarily expensive. Nebius reported about $5.7 billion of capital expenditures around the second quarter as it raced to secure GPUs, data centers, networking equipment and power. The company also posted a Q2 net loss of roughly $190 million despite its enormous revenue growth.
That creates a fundamental financing challenge.
Revenue can grow several hundred percent while free cash flow remains deeply negative if every dollar earned must be reinvested into new GPU clusters. The question is therefore not simply how fast sales grow, but how much capital Nebius needs to generate each additional dollar of future revenue.
Management is trying to solve that problem by financing individual infrastructure assets against contracted customer cash flows.
In July, Nebius raised approximately $775 million through its first senior secured debt financing. The facility is backed by deployed GPUs and contracted cash flows from an investment-grade customer and carries pricing of SOFR plus 2.5%. Nebius said the combination of the financing and customer cash flow covers more than 100% of the capital expenditure associated with the underlying deployment.
If that model can be repeated, it could materially reduce the amount of parent-company equity Nebius must use to finance growth.
But it also increases leverage.
The $5 Billion Convertible Offering Explains Why Bears Are Still Interested
Nebius provided short sellers with another argument in August when it launched one of the largest convertible-bond offerings seen from a rapidly growing AI infrastructure company.
The company expanded the offering to $5 billion after strong investor demand, with the potential to reach $5.75 billion if additional options are exercised. Reuters reported that the proceeds will fund data-center development and continued expansion of Nebius’s AI platform.
That financing is both bullish and bearish depending on perspective.
For bulls, demand for the bonds shows that capital markets are willing to fund Nebius’s expansion on enormous scale. The company now has access to billions of dollars needed to build capacity against long-term contracts from investment-grade customers.
For bears, convertibles create the possibility of future dilution. Reuters reported that a related $800 million convertible exchange could produce roughly 5.5% dilution, while the stock initially fell sharply as investors digested the financing.
The larger lesson is that Nebius cannot build its planned AI empire cheaply.
Investors must continually compare the value created by new infrastructure with the debt and dilution required to finance it.
Nebius Is Trying to Become Less Capital Intensive
One of the most interesting developments in 2026 may help address that concern.
Nebius introduced a partnership model in July that allows third-party infrastructure investors and data-center operators to finance and own facilities while Nebius supplies its architecture, software stack, hardware design and customers. Nebius then markets the resulting compute capacity through its cloud platform.
This model could materially change the economics of NBIS.
Instead of financing every data center itself, Nebius could increasingly behave like a technology and cloud-platform operator layered on top of infrastructure financed by outside capital. Management describes the arrangement as a higher-margin revenue stream requiring relatively little incremental capital.
Whether that works at scale remains to be proven.
But if Nebius can expand capacity without matching every new dollar of revenue with enormous balance-sheet spending, one of the strongest bearish arguments against the stock would weaken.
Is Nebius Stock a Short-Squeeze Candidate?
Yes—but the fundamental story matters more than the squeeze mechanics.
With approximately 21.9% of float short, NBIS clearly has enough bearish positioning to amplify positive catalysts. Short interest has also climbed substantially from around 15% at the beginning of 2026, showing that skepticism increased as the stock and valuation expanded.
However, the two-day short-interest ratio suggests bears could exit more easily than in truly illiquid squeeze setups. Investors should therefore avoid buying NBIS solely because the short percentage looks high.
The better bullish argument is that the shorts could be wrong about the business.
Nebius has Meta and Microsoft commitments measured in tens of billions of dollars, Nvidia has invested $2 billion, Q2 revenue grew more than fivefold, and the company continues securing power and new capacity around the world. Those are tangible operating developments rather than social-media speculation.
The short position simply raises the stakes if execution continues to beat expectations.
Outlook: NBIS Bulls and Bears Are Betting on the Same Question
Nebius now represents one of the purest public-market bets on the global shortage of AI compute.
The bulls believe demand from AI labs, hyperscalers and enterprises will remain so strong that nearly every GPU Nebius installs can be monetized at attractive rates. Nvidia’s latest outlook and the enormous infrastructure commitments being signed across the industry support that view.
The bears believe investors are extrapolating today’s exceptional GPU economics too far into the future. Competition is increasing, hardware depreciates quickly, financing requirements are massive, and customers may gain pricing power as more capacity comes online.
Both sides are ultimately making the same bet: whether AI-compute demand can continue outrunning supply long enough for Nebius to grow into its valuation.
With more than 55 million shares already sold short, that debate is no longer academic.
If Nebius keeps signing hyperscalers, delivering capacity and pushing revenue sharply higher, the bears may eventually become buyers themselves. But if AI infrastructure economics begin to weaken before NBIS earns back the billions it is investing, one of Wall Street’s biggest short positions could prove remarkably well timed.
