Bitcoin Price Explodes Above $71,000 as Crypto Rally Continues

Crypto Stocks Rally as Bitcoin Hits New Record High – Miners Lead the Surge

The Bitcoin price blasted above $71,000 on Thursday, August 20, 2026, extending a two-day crypto rally fueled by falling U.S. bond yields, renewed regulatory optimism in Washington and a violent short squeeze. Bitcoin traded near $71,700 during the European session, up roughly 3.4% on the day and about 13% over seven days, while crypto-linked stocks including Strategy and Coinbase surged alongside it.

The move marks Bitcoin’s highest level since early June and an abrupt reversal from the low-$60,000 range that had frustrated bulls for weeks. The critical question for investors now is whether $71,000 marks the beginning of a durable Bitcoin breakout—or merely the most explosive phase of a short-covering rally.

Bitcoin Price Breaks $71,000 After Weeks of Frustration

Bitcoin reached an intraday high around $71,500 on Thursday, according to market reports, putting the cryptocurrency more than 10% higher over two sessions. The advance followed Wednesday’s breakout above $68,000, when Bitcoin posted its largest percentage gain since March.

That is a major shift in momentum.

Only days earlier, Bitcoin had been struggling to hold $65,000 even as U.S. equities traded near record levels. The cryptocurrency remained far below its October 2025 record above $126,000, raising questions over whether institutional demand had weakened after the previous bull cycle.

Now the market has suddenly reclaimed several closely watched technical levels.

CoinDesk reported that Bitcoin had gained roughly 15% since Monday and moved back above important technical and on-chain thresholds. Wednesday’s advance also carried BTC above its 100-day and 200-day moving averages, levels that can attract momentum-oriented traders once breached.

But the trigger was bigger than a chart pattern.

Why Bitcoin Is Rallying: Treasury Shock Hits Bond Yields

One of the biggest catalysts came from an unlikely place: the U.S. Treasury market.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced plans to increase purchases of longer-dated government debt through Treasury buybacks. The move pushed longer-term yields lower and weakened the U.S. dollar, creating a powerful tailwind for risk assets including stocks, gold and Bitcoin.

MarketWatch reported that Bitcoin jumped above $70,000 for the first time in more than two months after the Treasury move, reaching approximately $71,288 at one stage.

Why does that matter for crypto?

Bitcoin has historically been sensitive to liquidity conditions and real interest rates. When bond yields fall, the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets decreases, while easier financial conditions can increase investor appetite for speculative assets.

A weaker dollar can reinforce the move.

Some traders also interpret aggressive government debt-management measures as supportive of assets viewed as alternatives to fiat currencies. Bitcoin’s fixed supply makes it particularly sensitive to narratives around monetary expansion, fiscal stress and currency debasement—even when the Treasury action itself is not equivalent to Federal Reserve quantitative easing.

Reuters explicitly cautioned that the Treasury intervention should not be confused with QE and may have limited long-term economic impact. But markets clearly treated the announcement as a liquidity-positive shock in the short term.

A Huge Short Squeeze Added Fuel

Macro conditions lit the match. Leveraged traders may have provided the gasoline.

The crypto rally triggered roughly $2.7 billion in short liquidations, according to market reports, making it one of the largest forced-liquidation episodes since 2021.

Short sellers borrow or use derivatives to bet that Bitcoin will fall. If Bitcoin instead rises sharply, leveraged positions can hit liquidation thresholds, forcing traders or exchanges to buy back exposure.

That buying pushes prices even higher.

As Bitcoin accelerates, additional shorts can then be liquidated, creating a self-reinforcing squeeze. This helps explain why crypto markets sometimes produce dramatically larger percentage moves than stocks after seemingly modest changes in the underlying macro backdrop.

The process also means investors should be careful about extrapolating the entire move.

Short covering can generate spectacular rallies without guaranteeing that equivalent amounts of new long-term capital are entering the asset.

Trump’s Crypto Push Adds Another Bullish Catalyst

Washington delivered a second catalyst.

President Donald Trump met cryptocurrency industry executives at the White House this week and urged lawmakers to advance legislation supported by the digital-asset industry. The meeting helped revive expectations that the regulatory environment for cryptocurrencies could continue shifting in a more industry-friendly direction.

The administration had already pursued policies intended to integrate digital assets more deeply into the U.S. financial system.

A May executive order stated that federal policy should encourage financial innovation, reduce regulatory barriers and improve integration of digital assets and other financial technologies into conventional financial services. The White House has also highlighted the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve established in 2025 as part of its broader digital-asset strategy.

For investors, regulatory clarity could have major financial consequences.

Clearer rules could encourage banks, asset managers and payment companies to expand crypto services while reducing the regulatory discount investors apply to companies such as Coinbase.

Still, legislation remains uncertain. Congressional timing and the eventual contents of any market-structure bill could change, so investors should distinguish political optimism from enacted law.

Crypto Stocks Are Exploding Alongside

The Bitcoin price rally is spilling directly into U.S.-listed stocks.

On Wednesday, Strategy climbed about 13%, Coinbase gained roughly 10%, Circle Internet Group rose around 10% and American Bitcoin jumped approximately 14% as BTC crossed $68,000.

The momentum continued Thursday.

Strategy, Coinbase and American Bitcoin were each indicated more than 6% higher in premarket trading as Bitcoin pushed toward $72,000.

Strategy is particularly sensitive because its corporate balance sheet contains enormous Bitcoin exposure. A rising Bitcoin price can therefore magnify investor expectations for the value of its crypto holdings, while declining BTC prices can produce equally violent downside moves.

Coinbase has a different exposure.

Higher crypto prices and rising volatility can encourage trading activity, potentially benefiting transaction revenue. Sustained asset appreciation can also improve sentiment toward subscriptions, custody and institutional crypto services.

But these stocks effectively give equity investors leveraged exposure to the crypto cycle.

That can be attractive during rallies—and punishing during reversals.

ETF Demand Could Decide Whether the Rally Lasts

One of the most important signals now is institutional demand through U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs.

Farside Investors‘ data show that spot Bitcoin ETFs generated substantial cumulative net inflows since their launch, although daily flows have repeatedly swung between strong buying and sharp redemptions. In early August, the products returned to positive territory, including approximately $170 million of net inflows on August 3, $212 million on August 4 and $244 million on August 5.

Coinbase separately noted last week that Bitcoin ETF inflows had reached a four-month high, with roughly $853 million entering during the preceding week.

That matters because ETF flows can indicate whether the rally is being supported by persistent investment demand rather than only leveraged traders covering shorts.

If Bitcoin remains above $70,000 while ETF inflows accelerate, the bullish case becomes considerably stronger.

If ETF demand weakens once the short squeeze fades, traders may discover that the apparent breakout lacked enough underlying buying power.

Price Prediction: Is $72,000 the Next Breakout Level?

Bitcoin is now approaching a technically important area around $71,000 to $72,000.

Before the latest surge, some technical analysis identified the 200-day exponential moving average near $71,500 as a major resistance level. Bitcoin’s move into that zone means the next few trading sessions could determine whether former resistance becomes support.

A sustained close above the area could encourage momentum traders to chase the breakout.

But investors should remember how far Bitcoin has already moved. A roughly 15% advance in several sessions leaves the market vulnerable to profit-taking, particularly after billions of dollars in bearish leverage have already been flushed out.

The macro backdrop is also not uniformly bullish.

Minutes from the Federal Reserve’s July meeting showed that some officials remained concerned about persistent inflation and saw the possibility that additional rate increases could become necessary. A renewed rise in Treasury yields or the dollar could quickly challenge the liquidity narrative currently supporting crypto.

What Investors Should Watch Next

The immediate battle is the $71,000-$72,000 zone. Holding above it would strengthen the argument that Bitcoin has escaped the multiweek range that dominated trading through much of the summer.

Investors should also monitor spot Bitcoin ETF flows, Treasury yields, the dollar, congressional progress on digital-asset legislation and whether crypto stocks continue confirming the move.

Most importantly, watch what happens when forced short covering runs out.

Bitcoin has already delivered the breakout bulls were waiting for. The next test is harder: proving that real buyers are prepared to keep paying above $70,000 once the squeeze is over.

If they are, the Bitcoin price rally may only be entering its next chapter.
