Micron’s rally was supported by a positive research note from Bank of America analyst Vivek Arya and a wider recovery across semiconductor stocks.

The analyst also argued that the apparent cost advantage of some Chinese AI models may reflect differences in business models, infrastructure usage and government support rather than a fundamental reduction in hardware requirements.

This reasoning helped ease fears that AI efficiency would quickly weaken demand for memory suppliers such as Micron.

The wider market environment also contributed to the move. The PHLX Semiconductor Index gained approximately 5.2% during the session, while Sandisk and several other memory, storage and chip-equipment stocks advanced sharply.

Why AI Models Still Need Large Amounts of Memory

Artificial intelligence systems rely on memory to store and rapidly access model parameters, training data and information generated while processing user requests.

High-bandwidth memory, commonly called HBM, is especially important for advanced AI accelerators. It allows processors to retrieve large quantities of data quickly, reducing the risk that expensive computing chips remain idle while waiting for information.

Model efficiency can reduce the computing resources required for a specific task. However, lower operating costs may also make AI applications more affordable and encourage wider usage.

This effect is sometimes described through the idea that efficiency can increase total consumption. When the cost of running an AI service declines, developers may integrate the technology into more products, serve more users and process more requests.

Memory Pricing Remains a Key Driver

Micron competes primarily with SK Hynix and Samsung in this market. The relatively small number of large suppliers can support pricing discipline when demand remains strong.

Nevertheless, investors should not assume that the competitive environment will remain unchanged. New capacity, technological advances or government-backed investment could increase supply over time.
